Darwin's Big Idea

Does it all stack up? Guest speaker Gerald Tanner will challenge our thinking: then with questions, there'll be a chance for you to challenge his.

At Dame Elizabeth Hall, Friday 29th, 7.30pm-9.30pm.

Want to whet your apetite? Have a read at some of these articles - whether you want to get your teeth stuck into a debate, you're intrigued, or wonder what value we have as human beings in this universe -
  • The Dawkins Letters, by David Robertson - light-hearted yet engaging and intelligent responses to chapters of Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion, now edited & published by CFP. The first letter got a huge response on Dawkins' own website - both positive and negative of course!
  • Peter May, a retired GP, writes on Has Science disproved God?
  • If TV's more your thing, and your interest was sparked by Channel 4's series The Genius of Darwin, presented by Richard Dawkins, you may like to have a look at Pete Hartwell's review before bringing your questions to Gerald on Friday.

Priceless!

The famous song lyric goes, "the best things in life are free..." but does this really ring true with our experiences? What are the best things in life and are they really free?

Maybe for you the best thing in life is the satisfaction of a job well done, or finally conquering that something that you've always struggled to do. Perhaps it's seeing a beautiful sunset, or having a wonderfully relaxing holiday. It could be spending time with your family and friends or the moment when your baby first smiled.

Whatever it is for you, it's so easy to take these things for granted especially as they don't cost a penny. But are these really the best things life can offer? What if there is something far better and it was right there in front of us all the time?

Why not come along to one of our Priceless events and hear about the best thing in life which truly is priceless: yet free to us all. Now that really is good news!

Worth it?

Why Jesus is a sound investment: Evening Meal and Talk

"All right?"

On the train, the TV screen was announcing a feel-good film with pretty actors and an easy plot. Some commuters were enjoying novels. Just don’t play us the news: we’d rather avoid it. Perhaps others were thinking of the mortgage renewal, or tired from working long hours. Many of us are a bit fed up with it all! So shall we just escape in TV dramas, or is there anything worthwhile in the real world?

We do know that human love, satisfying work, and the beautiful creation are really worthwhile. God made and gives us these good gifts, yet He knows we’re in a priceless mess even with them. We don’t like to think of that, but we know it’s not right that the world’s like this. Is there any real escape?

God promises something better, but it won’t come from us: He said, "Can the leopard change its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil." (The Bible, Jeremiah 13:23.) But God Himself has promised to end our selfishness and corruption, and renew the world perfectly, under the perfect rule of His Son Jesus. Until then, He forgives those who trust Him, and enables us to live right, whatever the economic weather.

Of course we’ve grown sceptical of big promises, and cynical about hope for the future. We can’t trust people much! But God is worth taking at His word. He’s not ignorant about how bad things are, nor is He unwilling to help. He was tortured and died to deal with our evil and to offer forgiveness. Then in giving Jesus new life from the dead He’s shown He’s able to deliver.

In the face of troubles now or whatever lies ahead, God’s words are worth trusting.

So come to a Priceless event and find out more about the promise of this generous, trustworthy God. Questions welcome!

Struggling with finances?

Financial problems are a major cause of stress and financial security is important to us all. That's why we're putting on a debt advice talk as part of our Priceless week.

Richard Gully, a member of our church, will be leading the surgery. "As a trained money adviser with 6 years of legal training, I have grown increasingly concerned at the amount of poor advice given on debt. I've worked in debt advice for 5 years helping the general public on a whole range of issues. There are no easy solutions but knowing a bit more about your rights and ways out can be a real help."

Richard will give a talk on the basics about handling debt and will point you in the direction of helpful organisations. He will also talk briefly on what the Bible has to say about money and debt. It may surprise you to see just how relevant it is for us today!
